I highly doubt this is true, but if it is it's bad news

Paramount Pictures announced today that Lost creator JJ Abrams will co-write, produce and direct the eleventh Star Trek film, set for release in 2008.
According to an article in the Dark Variety, the new film will be a prequel to the original Star Trek series, featuring younger versions of characters like James T. Kirk and Spock. The movie will chronicle events such as their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first mission into outer space.

If it is true, it can only be a bad Movie.
Nemesis and Insurrection was bad enough, but a movie with a new Kirk and Spock has not got a chance in hell of becoming a movie that holds true to the spirit of Star Trek :'(

quote from trektoday

looks like his is directing it, and it's going ahead

Quote
J.J. Abrams, who will be producing the upcoming eleventh Star Trek film, refused to comment on whether rumours that it would deal with Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy were accurate and even suggested that he might not be helming the film himself.

"The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation," said Abrams to Empire. "People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."

Abrams added that those involved in the production had "made a pact not to discuss any specifics" of the story. StarTrek.com had claimed that the story would center around Kirk and Spock's first meeting and their first adventure together in space. Empire noted that Abrams is a fan of the original series and quoted him as saying, "Those characters are so spectacular. I just think that...you know, they could live again."

StarTrek.com had cited Daily Variety and "sources at Paramount Pictures" in their statement that Abrams would direct as well as produce the upcoming eleventh feature film. Abrams, who is directing MI3 - the first film to utilise the soundstages at Paramount long reserved for Star Trek series from The Next Generation through Enterprise - had spoken briefly months ago about his ambition to be involved in a Star Trek movie to Now Playing Magazine.

"I will happily get involved in any new incarnations of anything that Leonard Nimoy was involved in. And that’s all I'll say about that," Abrams declared. Pressed about whether he would only be interested in Star Trek if Nimoy were personally involved, Abrams replied, "I think he's too busy doing those commercials now."

I don't care what kind of story they gonna make or in which period the story is set. The important thing is to get a lifesign that Paramount does still care about Star Trek at all.

But regarding the rumor that the 11th movie should first be about a whole new crew in the Federation-Romulan war I prefer the idea about a younger Kirk and Spock.

i also read with trepidation that the movie was going to be about the academy days of kirk and spock.
these characters are set in the minds of the fans and i think its dangerous to use other actors to portray these pop-icons
it's a bit sacrilegious almost
it has been some time since DS9 ended, but i would have liked a movie with that cast

I would like to see The Next Generation cast, once again. Even if it would be without Data (he was killed in Nemesis, mainly because Brent Spiner felt too old to be Data anymore).
The next logical choice is DS9 cast... they are still relatively young... and they didn't have their appearance on big screen yet.
I think that purpose of these early announcments about next film is just to test public opinion about it... and that nothing is decided yet.

I'd definately hope that its better than Insurrection. But a cast about the TOS would be a disaster! Why don't they make a movie about the Dominion? or another Voyage to the Delta Quadrant?
