CLIMATE change could send the price of beer rocketing because it might hamper the production of a key grain needed for the brew, a scientist has warned.

Jim Salinger, a climate scientist at New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, said environmental changes will probably cause a decline in the production of malting barley in parts of New Zealand and Australia.

Mr Salinger told the Institute of Brewing and Distilling convention: “It will mean either there will be pubs without beer or the cost of beer will go up.”

Similar effects could be expected worldwide.

He warned climate change could cause a drop in beer production within 30 years, especially in parts of Australia, as dry areas become worse and water shortages worsen.

Barley growing parts of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales would likely be harder hit than growing areas in New Zealand’s South Island.

“Most areas in Australia where malting barley is cropped are likely to experience producing declines,” he said.

ciggerettes are going up to 9 bucks a pack.

i heard figures taht said that raise (of a dollar fiffty a pack) would prevent and/or make 500,000 quit in the next 5 yeaars.

it wil make teen smoking near impossible (the prise of loosies would jump to 1 or 1.25.) and make the average pack a day smoker spend over 500 more a year, which goes directly into the citys pocket.

i say YAY

I have my doubts about that making that many quit.  Smokers are a very addicted bunch.  Here, what has had the most impact on smoking has been the reduction in places that smoking is allowed.  It used to be everywhere & now it's almost no where.  It used to be that non-smokers were the majority.  Last report I heard said that only 11% of Ottawans smoke now.  :)

First hops, now barley, too? Shit balls, this sucks. Well, more incentive to legalize another common recreational drug.
Pass the bowl!  Shit, Shit, Shit, I just knew it. I knew this global warming thing would eventually effect me.

Actually the liquor & cigarette costs both are highly inflated due to taxes.  Personally I don't care either way since neither is consumed in my house.  The amount of alcohol my hubby consumes in a year is probably equivalent to the consumption by one of you guys in a weekend.  If he liked to drink more often, I'd have him do the Brew-By-You type of alcohol.  The nice thing about those places is the alcohol is brewed on their premises, you get to choose your own ingredients so the flavour is more to what you want & the end cost is still waaaaay cheaper than going to the liquor or beer store.  Most of the time (if you know what you are doing) the stuff is almost as good or better than the professionally brewed stuff.
