There are tough shoes to fill as the lead of a Stargate franchise series with the likes of Richard Dean Anderson, Ben Browder and Joe Flanigan. But it seems Robert Carlyle is up for the task.

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello says the actor, best known for his role as Gaz in 1997's "The Full Monty," will take over the role of Dr. David Rush, who will lead a team trapped on an ancient ship on a set course.

The series, which is set to premiere on SciFi Channel in July, will follow "Stargate: Atlantis," which is ending after five seasons, and will be the third series in the Stargate franchise, which began with "Stargate SG-1" more than a decade ago.

"We are very excited about having an actor of this caliber, around which we can build a strong, character-based series," creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper told Ausiello in a statement, "Robert Carlyle will engage a broad audience and we hope to deliver a show that demonstrates to new viewers that the loyalty of longtime fans of the Stargate franchise has been well-deserved."

Carlyle got his start in the long-running Scottish detective series "Taggart" in 1990 with a guest role, and would go on to do a number of high-profile projects, including "The Full Monty" and 1996's "Trainspotting."

He voiced the character of Durza in the 2006 movie "Eragon" and played Don in the 2007 film "28 Weeks Later," according to Internet Movie Database.

He most recently played Carl Benton in the Fox telemovie "24: Redemption."

Filming for "Stargate: Universe" is expected to take place early next year for a July release.

Thanks to Joe for the tip!

My hubby told me this news the other day.  I have to say:  WOOOHOOOOO!!!!!  bouncy bouncy bouncy I loved him in Hamish MacBeth when I first was introduced to his acting.  He was fabulous in The Full Monty.  He is a great actor.  My hubby used to work in a bookstore in the biggest mall in downtown Toronto.  One day, Mr. Carlyle came into the store with his wife & mother-in-law.  The manager offered to open the store specially for him after hours & he declined, explaining he didn't want to put the employees out.  He was very nice to all of the staff: just the way you want someone you admire to behave!!

For this, I will try the new Stargate.  :)
