"Battlestar Galactica" may struggle to find viewers for its Friday night episodes, but it doesn't mean they're not there.
A new survey from The Nielsen Co., parent of ratings powerhouse Nielsen Media Research, says "Battlestar Galactica" has by far the largest increase in viewership from those recording episodes and watching it later than any other program on cable (or networks).
The audience for "Battlestar Galactica" jumps a whopping 53 percent when viewers who DVR and watch the show within seven days after its initial broadcast are counted, and its competition is not even close. "Burn Notice" on USA tries, but its increase is just 37 percent followed by "Heroes" on NBC, "90210" on The CW and "Sanctuary" on SciFi Channel, which jump 35 percent when timeshifters are counted.
The Nielsen list follows a network-focused list earlier this week that had "Heroes" on top followed by Fox's "Fringe."
The data tracks viewers from Jan. 1 to the end of November of shows that have at least a 1.0 household rating, and have broadcast four episodes or more.
In the list that includes cable offerings, "Fringe" actually moves to the bottom of the top 10 in a tie with "America's Next Top Model" on The CW, "The Starter Wife" on USA and "The Office" on NBC with 27 percent each.
"Eureka" has a 34 percent boost from DVR viewers, good enough for sixth place in the list.
But high percentages don't always mean higher viewers. In fact, no cable channel made the top 10 list of primetime programs showing the absolute difference in households from live viewing to timeshifting. "American Idol" on Fox, actually, holds the top two spots with its Tuesday and Wednesday broadcasts, adding between 1.9 million and 2.2 million households with the DVR. "Heroes" can add another 1.83 million households with timeshifting while "Lost" on ABC garners an additional 1.79 million.
"Fringe" is Fox's highest-placing scripted show in the list, gaining 1.6 million new households with the DVR, nearly 150,000 better than "House."
I hope that this will Nullified Nielsen Monopoly on this for good. GTO
