Back when "Lost" first premiered in 2004, the series was the buzz of the entertainment industry, especially since it wasn't supposed to even be a success.
But after its first Emmy win for Outstanding Drama Series in 2005, "Lost" has barely been able to get the attention to the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, although it did compete in the top drama category last year.
Now, however, it has a chance to enter its final season as an Emmy winner, picking up a handful of nominations including Outstanding Supporting Actor by Michael Emerson, who plays Ben Linus, as well as a writing nomination that is competing against only one show: "Mad Men."
Once again, however, "Battlestar Galactica" missed out on some of the major awards, while the now-canceled series "Pushing Daisies" picked up some post-mortem love with a number of its own nominations.
"Lost" is competing in the Outstanding Drama Series with some familiar faces including "Dexter" from Showtime, "Big Love" on HBO, "Mad Men" on AMC, "House" on Fox, "Damages" on FX Networks, and "Breaking Bad" on AMC.
Also up in a major category are writers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, who wrote the episode "The Incident," for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series. They are competing against four episodes of "Mad Men." Yes, "Mad Men" has completely dominated the writing category this year, which might mean a split voting could help get Cuse and Lindelof some much-deserved love from the Academy this year.
Emerson has his own tough competition, but he's hoping the draw and mystique of Ben Linus will win him over with voters in the Outstanding Support Actor in a Drama Series category. He will compete against past winner William Shatner from "Boston Legal" and one of his former colleagues on the show, Christian Clemenson. Also up are Aaron Paul for "Breaking Bad," William Hurt for "Damages" and John Slattery for "Mad Men."
"Pushing Daisies" picked up a major award nomination for Kristen Chenoweth, who played Olive Snook in the series, for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She will go against Amy Poehler and Kristin Wiig from "Saturday Night Live" on NBC, Jane Krakowski for "30 Rock," Vanessa Williams on "Ugly Betty" on ABC, and Elizabeth Perkins for "Weeds" on Showtime.
Other nominations for "Pushing Daisies" include Outstanding Art Direction for a Single-Camera Series for the episode "Dim Sum Lose Some" against "Cold Snap" from "Heroes" on NBC, "Burning House of Love" from "True Blood" on HBO, "The Hero in the Hold" from the Fox series "Bones" and "The Jet Set" from "Mad Men."
Robert Blackman and Carol Kunz received a nod for Outstanding Costumes for a Series for the "Pushing Daisies" episode "Bzzzzzzzzz!" while Daniel Curet, Yuko Tokunga Koach, Gloria Conrad and Elizabeth Rabe were nominated for Oustanding Hairstyling for a Single-Camera Series for "Dim Sum Lose Some."
Finally, Todd A. McIntosh, David Martin DeLeon and Steven Anderson were nominated for Outstanding Makeup for a Single-Camera Series (non-prosthetic) for "Dim Sum Lose Some."
Michael Rymer, the director best known for creating the look of "Battlestar Galactica" that was carried out through the show's four-season run on the former SciFi Channel, finally earned a nod in Outstanding Direction in a Drama Series for "Daybreak, Part 2," part of the series finale of "Battlestar Galactica." He will go against Bill D'Elia from "Boston Legal," Todd A. Kessler from "Damages," Rod Holcomb from "ER" and Phil Abraham from "Mad Men."
Also being recognized was the crew of Andrew Seklir, Julius Ramsay and Michael O'Halloran from the same "Battlestar Galactica" episode for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series, against the team of Stephen Semel, Mark Goldman and Chris Nelson from the "Lost" episode "The Incident." Both will compete against "Breaking Bad," "Mad Men" and "24" on Fox.
The sound editing team from "Battlestar Galactica" of Daniel Colman, Jack Levy, Vince Balunas, Sam Lewis and Michael Baber will have their work cut out for them in that category as they will go against two other genre shows: "Bloodline" from "Smallville" and "Mr. Ferguson is Ill Today" from "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles."
From the "Smallville" team are Michael E. Lawshe, Jessica Dickson, Norval Crutcher III, Paul Diller, Marc Meyer, Tim Cleveland, Jenny Leite, Chris McGeary, Michael Crabtree and Al Gomez. Working on "Sarah Connor" are Jon Ibrahim Mete, Pat Foley, Tim Farrell, David Werntz, Jerry Edemann, Michael Baber, Catherine Rose and Shelly Roden.
"Battlestar Galactica" and "Lost" will compete in the Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour) category for "Daybreak, Part 2" and "The Incident." The BSG team includes Rick Bal, Michael Olman and Kenneth Kobett. The "Lost" crew has Robert Anderson, Ken King, Scott Weber and Frank Morrone.
For Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series, it should be no surprise that it's almost completely dominated by genre shows.
"Battlestar Galactica" nominees are Gary Hutzel, Michael Gibson, Jesse Toves, Sean Jackson, Kyle Toucher, Pierre Drolet, Greg Behrens, Heather McAuliff and Dave Morton. For "Fringe" on Fox, it's Kevin Blank, Jay Worth, Andrew Orloff, Jonathan Banta, Steve Graves, Jonathan Spencer Levy, Scott Lewis, Steve Fong and Tom Turnbull.
For the "Heroes" episode "The Second Coming," the crew includes Mark Scott Spatny, Eric Grenaudier, Gary D'Amico, Michael Cook, Daniel Kumiega, Chris Martin, Meliza Fermin, Ryan Wiebr and Diego Galtieri.
And for the Syfy series "Sanctuary" in the episode "Sanctuary For All," the crew includes Lee Wilson, Lisa Wilson, Sebastien Bergeron, Les Quinn, Matt Belbin, Mladden Miholjcic, Ken Lee, Philippe Thibault and Lionel Lim.
Also nominated in the category was "Ghost Whisperer" on CBS.
In the acting categories, Jim Parsons was nominated for lead actor in a comedy series for his portrayal of Sheldon Cooper in CBS' "The Big Bang Theory." He will go up against Jemaine Element for "Flight of the Conchords" on HBO, Tony Shalhoub for "Monk" on USA, Steve Carell for "The Office" on NBC, Alex Baldwin for "30 Rock" on NBC, and Charlie Sheen for "Two and a Half Men" on CBS.
For Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, it's only Michael C. Hall from "Dexter" going against Bryan Cranston in "Breaking Bad," Hugh Laurie for "House" on Fox, Gabriel Byrne for "In Treatment" on HBO, Jon Hamm for "Mad Men" and Simon Baker for "The Mentalist."
In the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, Jimmy Smits' character of Miguel Prado on "Dexter" will go against Edward Asner from "CSI: NY" on CBS, Ted Danson on "Damages," Ernest Borgnine on "ER" and Michael J. Fox on "Rescue Me."
For Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, Christine Baranski, who played Beverly Hofstadter in "The Big Bang Theory," will go against Gena Rowlands from "Monk," Betty White from "My Name Is Earl," Tina Fey from "Saturday Night Live," Jennifer Aniston from "30 Rock" and Elaine Stritch on "30 Rock."
One category that is definitely showing a sign of the times is Outstanding Special Class - Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Programs that are being found on the Web. "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" from Joss Whedon, Michael Boretz and David Burns is up against "Battlestar Galactica: The Face of the Enemy" from Ronald D. Moore, David Eick, Jane Espenson and Harvey Frand. They will go against the "Bruce Springsteen Super Bowl Halftime Show," "The Daily Show: The Daily Correspondents on Jon Stewart," and "30 Rock's Kenneth the Web Page."
For Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media, "The Dharma Initiative" from ABC.com, that is tied into "Lost," will compete against the digital experiences of "The Office" and "30 Rock" from NBC.com.
Other nominations to note:
* "The Big Bang Theory" episode "The Hofstadter Isotope" is up for Outstanding Art Direction for a Multi-Camera Series thanks to the work of John S. Shaffner and Ann Margaret Shea.
* The "True Blood" team of June Lowry Johnson and Libby Goldstein are up for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series.
