Paramount Pictures brings the 2009 "Star Trek" movie to DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, but in December, it has a bit of a different offering.

Found by a film collector in Germany, CBS Home Entertainment now has plans to distribute what is being described as an alternate version of the 1965 "Star Trek" pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before." This episode was filmed with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy in the lead roles, and was done after NBC executives called the first outing, known as "The Cage" with Jeffrey Hunter as Capt. Pike, as "too cerebral." It's set for a Blu-ray release Dec. 15.

It is believed that this version that surfaced earlier this year was the one NBC executives actually saw back in the early 1960s that finally led them to greenlighting "Star Trek" for series. Of course, changes would be made after that, bringing the more familiar style to "Where No Man Has Gone Before" that fans of the classic series are more used to.

Probably the most interesting part of this cut, which includes footage that has never been seen before, is the change in Kirk's famous monologue introducing each episode, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The whole "seek out new life and new civilizations" has been replaced with "but now a new task. A probe out into where no man has gone before."

"When we first discovered the original film print existed, we jumped at the chance to give Star Trek fans the opportunity to add this never-aired pilot to their collections," said Ken Ross, executive vice president and general manager of CBS Home Entertainment, in a release. "It will be a real treat for fans to see and hear how it all could have begun."

The episode will be a part of the original series Season 3 DVD set, and will be restore

'Where No Man (Or Fan) Has Gone Before'

STAR TREK 2nd PILOT Alternative Version

Back in 1965, NBC decided to do something no network to that point had ever done before: They decided to spend the money on a second pilot for this show from Gene Roddenberry called "Star Trek."

They had watched "The Cage," and thought that audiences at the time would not get the deep story it had to tell. They wanted something a little more action-oriented, and got that with "Where No Man Has Gone Before."

In an effort to get a greenlight for the series, Roddenberry himself screened a rough cut of the second pilot to NBC executives, and what they saw was different from what would eventually appear on film.

No one had seen this rough cut in more than 40 years, until a German film collector uncovered it. Now CBS Home Entertainment is offering it on its Season 3 Blu-ray releas

I wouldn't bother myself.
From what I gather, the main difference is the opening credits and voice over, and that's been available, and on Youtube, for years. This is a higher quality version, but nothing new.

I was thinking when I started reading that they had another thing they hold out when they first release, only to make you buy another more enhanced copy.  But this isn't worth either waiting or buying twice.  Glad I went ahead & bought the dvd yesterday! Cheesy
