New eligibility requirements disqualified virtually half the field, leaving only a few standing

With awards season really kicking into gear, "Star Trek" and "Avatar" have already earned some prestigious nominations giving it a boost toward the Oscars.

However, the Writers Guild of America honors might not exactly be counted among them.

Both films were among those honored for both original and adapted screenplays by the WGA Monday, but the field they were chosen from was far smaller than usual. In fact, by many estimates, it was half the size.

The issue? The WGA changed its submission guidelines this year that requires all writers of a film to be members of the WGA, or affiliated with five related unions. Because of that, some films including "District 9" and "Inglourious Basterds" were not eligible, according to Variety.

Some might look at those exclusions as more of a "best of the rest" scenario, then what might be rightfully deserved nominations. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are up for adapted screenplay for "Star Trek" against "Crazy Heart," Julie & Julia," "Precious" and "Up in the Air."

James Cameron will take "Avatar" against "500 Days of Summer," "Hangover," "The Hurt Locker," and "A Serious Man" for original screenplay.

In the past, the WGA awards have been key in trying to predict what might be up for Oscars when they are announced in a few weeks. More often than not, WGA winners end up being Oscar winners, including Dustin Lance Black last year for "Milk." Whether that will continue with different submission rules for the WGA and the Oscars is another story.

For those keeping score, "Avatar" -- which has grossed $429.1 million domestically so far -- has been nominated for awards from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the Chicago Film Critics Association, Directors Guild of America, the Golden Globes and the Producers Guild Awards, according to Internet Movie Database.

"Star Trek," which earned $257.7 million at the box office, has been nominated for awards from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, Casting Society of America, Grammys, People's Choice Awards and Screen Actors Guild, IMDb says.
