THE SKINNY: When inquired about the current state of AVATAR 2, News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch told Hollywood Reporter that they're in "very early talks" with James Cameron for a sequel to the sci-fi epic.
"We will be pushing for one," said Murdoch, but advised analyst to not "hold your breath for an early one." A reasonable sentiment considering how long it usually takes Cameron to churn out his hits.
Another factor to consider when dealing with Cameron is price. Although just how much News Corp. really cares about the cost an AVATAR sequel is debatable, considering that the film's become the biggest box office success ever. Regardless, the Fox mother company wants to make sure they have all their finances in order before moving forward with the next film.

In an interesting, albeit disappointing side note, Murdoch confessed that the AVATAR DVD release will not be in 3D. The DVD is expected to be out before the fiscal year ends on June 30, but Murdoch says that the 3D technology won't be ready by then, and will have to be reserved for a future release.

AVATAR actress Sigourney Weaver recently appeared on the French television show LE GRAND JOURNAL, and discussed the possibility of her character returning for the sequel. While it's hard to understand what she's saying over the French translator, Sigourney notes that her character is "in the tree" – referring to Grace's consciousness being "uploaded" into the Tree of Souls at the time of her death.
She goes on to say that while she can't promise anything, she thinks that director James Cameron has a few ideas on how to "keep the family together," implying that her character could possibly make a return for AVATAR 2.
Does this mean we'll be seeing Grace again in a spirit realm of sorts? We can't imagine that Cameron would limit a presence as powerful as Weaver's to merely a "voice."
