Bigger, longer and uncut, James Cameron prepares to add 40 minutes
If you loved the extended cut of Lord of the Rings, you're going to love what's coming up for "Avatar."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, an extended director's cut is on the horizon for the science-fiction epic, and, unlike Lord of the Rings, this one will be destined for the big screen. Apparently about 40 minutes worth of footage was removed from the movie in order to squeeze it into the two-hour, 40-minute movie that stormed the box office over the festive period.
How much will actually make it into theaters is anyone's guess as a typical analog reel in IMAX theaters is 170 minutes, meaning that director, James Cameron, can only add about another 10 minutes worth of footage. Should he choose to add all 40 minutes, then the updated cut is unlikely to be seen in IMAX.
The re-release is expected to happen sometime in the fall in what is traditionally considered a slower time for movie releases. Since opening Dec. 18, "Avatar" has grossed an astounding $730 million at the domestic box office and an additional $1.9 billion internationally, according to Box Office Mojo. It quickly surpassed "The Dark Knight," the last big hit for the genre, which earned a worldwide box office take of just over $1 billion and is now the highest-grossing film of all time in North America, surpassing "Titanic," also directed by Cameron.
The 2-D version of "Avatar" is expected to be released on DVD in May, and, if the re-release goes ahead as predicted, an additional DVD release could be in the cards for the beginning of 2011.
A sequel already is in the works.
