The Jedi have fallen and the dark side clouds everything ... even the future of the long-awaited Star Wars live-action series.

Surrounded by rumor and false information, there has been very little news on the actual progress of the Star Wars series that was announced back in 2005. However all official announcements regarding the status of the project indicated it would be a big budget Star Wars adventure for the small screen, and it was moving quickly toward production.

Well, apparently the concept is just too big for the small screen and the whole series has entered limbo -- one it will be very lucky to ever escape from.

"The live action TV show is kind of on hold because we have scripts, but we don't know how to do them," creator George Lucas told fans at a screening of "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back." "They [the episodes] literally are Star Wars, only we're going to have to try to do them at a 10th of the cost. And it's a huge challenge, a lot bigger than what we thought it was gonna be."

The original premise for the series was reportedly a dovetailing of "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" and "Star Wars: A New Hope" focusing on the life of Boba Fett and his adventures as he made a living in a galaxy controlled by the Empire. That idea has been shot down and revived on more than one occasion (especially once the character was introduced into Cartoon Network's "The Clone Wars" animated series). But all discussions have confirmed that the series would be "much darker, much grittier, and it's much more character-based" than the original movies.

Plans to debut the series between 2010 and 2012 are now open to speculation.

Lucas was just put on the spot by some fans, he probably hadn't thought about this for years.

So, all they have is some 5-year-old scripts, which have been obsoleted by Clone Wars.

In other words, it's dead.
