Naoko Mori, James Marsters Join Syfy's 'Three Inches'

"Torchwood" alum Naoko Mori has been signed on as a regular in Syfy's  new drama series, "Three Inches." She is joined by fellow genre thespians Stephanie Jacobsen of "Battlestar Galactica" fame and James Marsters, who previously worked with Mori on "Torchwood" and has also appeared on "Caprica."

The trio will play members of a gang of less-than-super heroes.

"Three Inches" tells a story from the viewpoint of Walter, played by Noah Reid, a mid-20s average guy who gets jolted by lightning. He then discovers he has the ability to move objects with his mind. But there is a major caveat; He can only move objects three inches at a time.

Walter is recruited into a band of "super" heroes, all with similarly underwhelming abilities. His troop is led by Troy, played by Marsters, of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" fame.

Syfy continues to develop new shows at an almost blistering pace. Recent shows rumored to be on the table include the Bryan Fuller adaptation "The Lotus Caves," an Americanized turn of the BBC hit "Being Human" and a rooted comedy "Saved By Zeroes" starring Michael Rosenbaum from "Smallville." The attitude of the shows being planned show that Syfy is aiming for a lighter tone for the future.

Shows currently in the development phase are almost of a comedic take on drama. Solid ratings of "Warehouse 13" and "Eureka" further show the network is moving slightly away from edgy and darker outings like "Stargate: Universe" and "Battlestar Galactica."

Mori's turn at working on a production in North America also showcases that more of the Torchwood team are hoping to make a splash in the United States. John Barrowman just came off a multiple episode story arc on "Desperate Housewives" and is getting ready to film the 10-part fourth season of "Torchwood" in the United States. Even with his growing popularity here, Barrowman insists his home is still in Wales. If "Three Inches" goes into full production, Mori could see more opportunity in American media.

Production of "Three Inches" will start at the end of August in Toronto.
