It's not about the invasion, it's about survival

They come, they conquer, and then they exterminate the human race.

A lot of science-fiction shows are like that, and focus on the arrival and subsequent bloodbath that follows. TNT's upcoming "Falling Skies" will be different however, and will instead focus on what happens to the human race after the invasion.

In the series, which stars "ER's" Noah Wyle, the invasion of Earth serves as the backdrop to a character drama rather than as the focus of the series itself. Wyle plays a Professor of History who ends up on a quest to reunite his family following an alien assault.

"It's not about the invasion – it's about the resistance," co-executive producer Mark Verheiden told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's about finding hope in an otherwise hopeless situation."

But how can a History teacher make a difference in such an apocalyptic situation? Well, one of the characters specialisms is military history and that knowledge will help him not only survive, but lead the human survivors.

"Our show walks a really interesting line between being a character-based drama and being a sci-fi show," Wyle said. "It's not really one or the other but has a little something for both."

Among the character dynamics at work are common threads of teen angst, only thanks to the alien incursion the problems go from prom and allowance to guns and the best way to survive.

"It's taking place six months after the invasion, so you're seeing how people are banding together and fighting for one cause: living," said Roy, who plays Wyles son, Hal. "There are a lot of different ways of going about that. We have military guys and civilians; there's a nice clash going on."

"Falling Skies" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on TNT.

Let's pay attention to this one, Guy's

3 min trailer here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjroVVhe8G0

Starts this weekend.

A bit of Jericho (post holocaust low intensity war), a bit of V (massive alien ship pissing all over us), add Spielberg (dad protecting his cute kids). Could be fun.

Have to say am looking forward more to his dinosaur series, Terra Nova, but I'll give this one a try.

After watching the opening 2 eps, a bit underwhelmed.

One thing distracting: all the leads are so Hollywood beautiful, especially of course the girls. All dead sexy, and with lovely hair after 6 months of fighting a guerrilla war.

The boys are pretty too, if you like that kind of thing.

The political subtext though is a bit off, especially perhaps to a non-American.
This shows valiant Americans fighting against a vicious alien occupying force.

It all somehow seems to be a way to justify American violence against its enemies.
"Kill them in the Middle East before they come and invade us and turn our children into zombies".

Really, Jericho was much more interesting, (once it got over the soapy elements that dragged it down at the start).

Wow and i liked it,Yes it had allot of copy cat stuff from Spielberg in it but it was fine enough to see what they will do with this story. One question to anyone, Its what the old man said why do they Spiders have Bots that are Biped??? are they there to harvest meat ( People)?? I have my suspicion. Any one???

I loved also when Maggie ask the doctor will that dude live, when she said yes.Maggie pumped him with 3 bullets and the other one with 2.And said what they where going to do with that lovely peace of Eye candy Cheesy  BTW Maggie seems not to like chocolates  Roll floor laugh xD  so beware. It's in its infancy so let wait and see what they will bring forth.I do know this thing, the suits won't be so easily try to cancel this cuss this time Steven Spielberg is backing this.Back lash from him won't be good. It's like when Stargate first started they where bumbling around not getting any tech not picking up any weapons, or being bone over and over by the Tok-kra remember???? until years later  in the show.We saw Daniel dying being ascended, then  descended again, and enhanced by the other group, almost being ascended again. But we stay with it,until they boned us all.

Here is some of what i could picked out in an article:

It's very Spielberg.
And the theme of "Americans are victims of evil invaders, now we have to kick ass" has troubling implications. But that will make it all the more popular in the US.

I found it pretty funny when the professor was giving examples of how ragged resistance fighters had beaten superior foreign forces that he didn't mention either Vietnam or Afghanistan.

I'll probably watch it, but as post-apocalyptic series go, Jericho was a lot more plausible and Walking Dead a lot more involving.

The thing of biped robots while the "skitterers" are 6 legged: that must be a clue. Perhaps the skittererers themselves are slaves, controlled by the "harness" as the human kids are.

All very silly, it would be a lot cheaper to breed/clone slaves on your home world than move a gigantic army to another planet and try to conquer it. or just make robots, they obviously have the tech.
The same implausibility as Avatar, V, Independence Day, etc.

It's hard to think of any motive for interstellar war. Unless you're really paranoid and just want to wipe out other species before they do the same to you, and that's simple enough. Drop a few medium asteroids on earth and nothing left except a few bacteria. Come back a few decades later and colonise it if you want.  This one-to-one urban warfare thing is just nuts.

This is great we need more of this on this Leecher site  Nanananana ,more involvement.

Well A-HK in this I think we will agree to disagree.Which is fine, cause we all can't have the same opinion on everything.Other wise we would Borg. I would have liked for more discussion on this site from other peeps, but perhaps it will be coming.

On the part that you have mention of that it's out of the conscientiousness of the USA,Lets face it its made by the us TV station,so they are trying to appeal to the audience here.Because they are the ones that is paying for the freight.

And also every major Country had there own version of Vietnam,Russia had chechnya, France VS Indochina, Britain Scotts VS Welsh. And as for Jericho among some of the reason allot peeps outside of the USA liked is because of nuclear attacks on 23 major cities in the contiguous United States. They ( The network ) wanted to cancel it after the first season No ratings. While a fan campaign was able to convince the network to bring the show back for a seven-episode second season, it was canceled for a second time after that run.Only in the USA that i know of, can fans do this.Because they know if the fans don't watch it's gone.

As for what would be the motive for an interstellar war, Is simple to quet G'Kar of B-5 : Why does any advanced civilization seek to destroy a less advanced one? Because the land is strategically valuable, because there are resources that can be cultivated and exploited, but most of all - simply because they can.

As for my suspicion of the Aliens i will give my answer after seeing next week,Just to be sure. Doesn't anyone else have a comment on this movie yet????

As for Alien contact, either it'll be something like Close Encounters, a love fest, or they'll "just nuke us from orbit".

If they're evil, and have the level of technology to get here, we have absolutely no chance.

The movies give us a chance by having the aliens do stupid things, like the ID4 spaceships hovering a few miles up in the air where we can attack them with our little fighter jets. And these FS "skitterers" are wandering around shooting at people in the street. Dumb. If they want the planet, sterilise it overnight with a gamma ray burst. Drop some seeds of their own life here and in a couple of years they have a nice clean new planet, no troublesome natives, no need for ground troops at all.

This is the same reason I hate Avatar. The human army in that does what alien invaders do in the other movies, being complete idiots so the primitive natives can kick their asses "mano a mano". One single nuke and bye-bye Na'avi in any real conflict.

Of course I know that the choices are made to make it more palatable to the US viewer. But that's not me. Good luck to them though, it's not terrible, I'll probably keep watching it, but I've seen much better, that rated much lower, showing I'm just not in the core demographic. I like the more cynical and hardcore shows, like TSSC, even Firefly. And currently, Game of Thrones though it's not SF at all. GRRM started off writing SF but he went to fantasy a long time ago.

Look at his cast photo: how beautifully coiffured everyone is. How toned and clear skinned. How hot all the girls and guys are.
It's Falling Skies 90211.

Of course they all looked like Eye candy,Who would want to watch homely, zit faced actors being a Hippocrates.Lets not forget whom is making this ( They Want $$$$ on ROI ),Its not a documentary, or Unicef ( UNICEF has repeatedly called on governments to ensure basic services for children and this includes providing food where the need exists. ) When will this happen.  Roll floor laugh xD

Perhaps these aliens are like The ( Predator species ) They preferred it mano a mano, even though there tech is higher.Something can be set when you get your hands dirt in your work. Cheesy

Well i will sit and wait on how it will progress,Perhaps even A-HK will be an ardent fan someday. Tongue

The new 'it' genre is Dystopian/Post-Apocalyptic

Replacing the Vampire craze that has inundated the YA and fiction world the past few years is Dystopia. The idea that real life catastrophes could happen to everyday people (like the end of life as we know it) is a far more frightening 'reality', with so many more avenues for self discovery than Vampires and monsters, and teens are starting to pick up on that vibe.

Look at what's hot right now, The Hunger Games Trilogy, The Passage, The Judas Syndrome Trilogy, new books like Jeyn Roberts recently penned Dark Inside, which was just picked up by McMillan press in the UK.
It's obvious where the world psyche lies right now. Dystopian themes are exploding onto the scene and most are driven by an apocalyptic event.

Sure, this genre has ruled over the science fiction world in the past, but has matured and grown into a separate genre with a dedicated following.

Look into these top picks while you still have the chance. Because if the universal mind is bent on Dystopia, you might want to learn a thing or two before the end comes.

So, nuke them vampires or unleash a biological weapon on them so we can focus on the apocalypse and what we'll do about it.
