The last time we had a ‘Star Trek’ series on the air was six years ago and the last time we had a good ‘Star Trek’ series on the air was another four years before that. After J.J. Abram’s relaunch of the movie series, is the time right for another ‘Star Trek’ television series? If you ask writer/producer David Foster, the answer is an emphatic “yes!”

In a recent interview with Trek Web, Foster gave details on a his new Trek proposal. Like Abrams’ film, Foster’s Trek would feature a “highly energized…much younger cast” while returning to the “original series’ roots”. However, the new series won’t interfere with Abram’s Trek since it is set sometime after ‘Star Trek: Voyager’ in what is now called the Prime Universe (the universe where Kirk, Picard, and Janeway exist before history was changed by Spock’s time-travelling escapades). In that original series vein, the new series will feature some classic Trek races that fans have come to know and love: Klingons, Ferengi, Andorians, and Vulcans.

Foster says of the plot:

“The Klingons are getting very restless since the Praxis incident forced them to come to the peace tables, and are tired of having to rely on the Federation for support. The Ferengi have discovered a vast new resource that has propelled them towards instant riches and power beyond anything they have previously experienced.”

Foster’s previous science fiction experience is in short films with ‘Clockwork Infinity’ and ‘Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming’ but it sounds like he’s got this new Trek planned out pretty well. He had this to say when asked about the show’s development:

“The series concept is fully developed, subject to change of course, with a solid 5-7 year series plan, pilot script and a conceptualized finale that intends to define Star Trek for generations, extensive character bios, costume and ship/set designs, and more.”

5-7 years? That would be spectacular! Foster did point out that the show hasn’t been pitched to CBS yet so it may never make it to screen. However, I think that the ideas sound interesting and I know I’m not the only Trekkie who’d love to see Trek back on the small screen. I know that Foster’s probably already made his plans for cast and characters, but I’d like to be the first to vote that we see Wesley Crusher as Captain of his own starship this time around.

Hmmmmmm, i wait and see ...
