Below is the guide I wrote for ScifiDatabase people, you guys get a copy too..now you can rip like the best of us...

------------------------------------------
I have been meaning to write this guide for a while now.

I rencently started ripping episodes off DVD's. Before I started, I looked all over the internet for guides and all i ever found was outdated guides that were crap.

So here you go...Atlas's guide to a 350MB Episode from a DVD.

Software you need.(uploaded to my space)
SmartRipper
http://www.scifidatabase.com/atlas1369/Ripping/smart.exe
DVD2AVI
http://www.scifidatabase.com/atlas1369/Ripping/dvd2avi1.77.4.zip
VFABI Codec/Converter
http://www.scifidatabase.com/atlas1369/Ripping/VFAPIConv-1.05-EN.zip
to install the codec correctly do the following in the directory you unzipped this file
Run the vifpset.bat
right click on "Oemsetup.inf" and click install
right click on "vifp.inf" and click install
VirtualDub
http://www.scifidatabase.com/atlas1369/Ripping/VirtualDubMod_1_5_10_1_All_inclusive.zip

1. Get the episode off the DVD.
Use Smart Ripper and click on the files icon to extract all the VOB files that correspond to the Episode you want to rip. The best way to find out what VOB files you need is to play the DVD and see what chapter your player is playing when its playing an ep..
2. Use DVD2AVI to create a project file.
  a. open DVD2AVI
  b. select the first VOB file that Smartripper created, DVD2AVI will automaticaly
select the next VOB files in line.
  c. make sure these settings are set under Audio.
    Track Number> Track Number 1
    Output method>Decode to Wav
Dolby Digital Decode> Dolby Surrond sound Downmix
    48 -> 44.1> Ultrahigh
  d. Click File>"SAVE PROJECT"...this will create a .dv2 file and a .wav file
3. Creating the Pseudo Avi.
   a. Close DVD2AVI and open the VFAPI Codec Converter
   b. Open your .dv2 file that was created by DVD2AVI
   c. Click Convert and close the program.
this creates a fake video file that can be opened up in VDub.(the video file streams video from the VOB files you ripped. DONT DELETE YOUR VOB files.
4. Encoding the Video and Audio back to gather again.
   a.Open VDub
b.File>Open Video File and select the pseudo Avi that was just created.
   c. Press F5, if you see horizontal lines in your video, then follow step 4.d, if you
dont see the lines skip 4.d
   d. Video>Filters Click Add Select deinterlance, press ok,ok,ok
5. Video Encoding
  a. File>File Information, look to the right of were it says, "Lengh:", and write down
how many frames your video has.
  b. Click Video>Compression>DIVX6 Codec ----Click Configure
  c. I would advice you to use the DivX Bitrate Calculator, click on the little calculator
  d. Select frames, put in the amount of frames your video has, leave the FPS section
    alone
  e. type in your file size you want, and change the audio bitrate to 40, ACCEPT
  f. Click OK
6. Audio Encoding
  a. Click on Streams>Streams List
  b. Click Add, select your wav file that DVD2AVI created, click ok
  c. right click on the audio steam, select Full Proccessing mode
  d. right click again and select Compression, select MP3, 40kbts 22 hz, Ok,Ok
7. Save it all togather
a.File>Save as and name the file what ever you want and your computer will start
     to encode the video.

Well thats it. Have fun Ripping and encoding.

If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask.

Thanks Atlas.
Let's get some more guys making mistakes. Grin
All you budding encoders get at it.
We won't slaughter you if you make a few mistakes. Tongue
What we would especially like to see are episodes from the older original series which cannot be found elsewhere.

Thats is a lot of work, and whilst I respect an individual who can work out methods like that, and understand the processes involved probably too, I need a simpler method. Fairuse Wizard is it.

This is not my link, but one I used and pass on to you for your convenience and use. My prefence for using Fairuse Wizard  should in no way be construed as undermining the work put into that method outlined above. I wish I understood the processes involved half as much as that.

FairUse Wizard 2.4

Code:

If you need the Codecs:
Includes DivX Create Bundle v6.1.1 & XviD-1.1.0

Or if you prefer going to the source...

Hmm.. I have tried using the epicoder software found at the software section above and seems can't get it to work for dvd ripping. Is this software for dvd ripping or converting .avi file to dvd?. Why in the process box, you can choose several type of output sizes as if it is for dvd ripping but the only file type to rip from, is .avi and not .vob or dvd type file...
