Actor who played Data speaks out over 'Nemesis' failure

If blame is going to be tossed around about why "Star Trek: Nemesis" was such a huge failure, you need to start with the fans.

At least that's what Brent Spiner, who played Data in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and the subsequent movies, told the official Star Trek Magazine, as reported by TrekMovie.com.

"We worked on the story with the intention of making it for the fans," Spiner said. "With every Star Trek movie prior to that, we tried to find a way to bridge the gap between the fans and the general public. With 'Nemesis' we said, 'Forget that! Let's make a movie for the fans, because that's the people who actually go to see the films.' And what happened? They didn't go!

"Usually the films opened big, even if they had a lot of competition, but 'Nemesis' didn't even do that. That was a message from the fans that they were done with us."

"Star Trek: Nemesis" opened on Dec. 15, 2002, just days before "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" opened. The film made $18.5 million on opening weekend, and did a total American box office of $43.1 million.

In comparison, the previous movie -- "Star Trek: Insurrection" -- had an opening day box office of $22 million in 1998, going on to gross $70.1 million.

Spiner says he's all for restarting the Star Trek franchise, however, despite his previous comments on J.J. Abrams' idea for Star Trek XI.

"I think they're right to start a new movie franchise that will hopefully spawn a new series that will spawn new movies," Spiner said.

I think this guy should just stick into being an "hippocrate"   An actor is a person who acts as a person they are not. that is a hippocrate.

It's the producers who failed the fans. Ala berman and braga. They made crappy choices and series based on making money, not keeping to trek or the fans.

Nemesis was probably one of my least favourite Trek movies & I'm likely to forgive almost anything.  But the whole thing was so bloody negative & then Data dying at the end was a nail in the coffin for me.  Why not have Wesley Crusher die instead?  I'm sure people would have been cheering that one!

Exactly! i just hate how they kiled data

Berman : "I think it'll increase the WOW factor if we kill data" Bragga : "Oh man that is killer, you are so awesome!!"

No respect, just some flashy stunt to get more $ i hate those motherfuckers

I think you're probably right about it, sadly.  It was a cop-out having his brother show up to take his place.  No one can replace Data.  angry  The series can never be the same after that.  It will always have a huge hole in it.

I agree with you there, Kosh.  I saw it in the theatre too.  At the time, if it was a movie I really liked I'd go see it again.  That was the first Star Trek movie (ignoring that Shatner-directed piece of crap) I didn't.

Yes, he also wrote books on the Tekwars.  They were quite good.  And ghost written.  Cheesy

There you go.  Another example of why it was the studio/producers fault & not the fans.

I personally think most of the trek movies were average. Star Trek just doesn't translate to the big screen too well. Compare it to Star Wars, there's no competition. I think they should just concentrate on making good quality series like the Next Generation and DS9.  Peace

Well, I just think star trek does well only when it is more like how the real world is and not a fake one.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist figure out that if you release any movie about the same time as LOTR it will always fall behind. I went to the theatre to see the movie and the place was full.
