SCOTS star James McAvoy's latest job offer is out of this world - playing Scotty in Star Trek.
Producers of longawaited movie Star Trek XI think the 28-year-old is perfect for the iconic role.
And Trekkies agree - they have been campaigning for James, who stars in epic The Last King of Scotland, to get the part on fan websites.
The script for the new film has just been finished by Lost creator JJ Abrams and will star Matt Damon as Captain Kirk.
Paramount Pictures said: "We are very excited about the film. Casting is in the early stages - we cannot comment on any names yet."
But an insider revealed: "The producers are keen to have a Scottish Scotty and James is the No.1 choice.
"They think he could form a brilliant double act with Matt. James' star is on the rise after The Last King of Scotland. He's Scottish and has box office appeal so he fulfils both criteria."
The movie will feature a young Kirk and Spock just out of Space Academy. In the original film they were played by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.
Being Scotty - first played by the late James Doohan - is a dream role for sci-fi fan James, who shot to fame in hit drama Shameless.
The Glasgow-born actor is to star in another sci-fi movie, Wanted. He said: "I have a passion for sci-fi. Films, books, memorabilia, art - I'm an addict.
"It dates from when I read The Lord of the Rings at 11.
"After that I read Frank Herbert's Dune chronicles and watched Star Trek."
Filming on Star Trek XI is due to start this year.
McAvoy's agent was unavailable for comment.
It's a big shoe he's filling in i hope he does a great job.
