So Charlie is marked for death and one of the big questions from season three is revealed, but is the answer worthwhile? One of the problems with LOST is that like a matryoshka doll whenever you get an answer, another question lies underneath it. One of the big questions of season three was how Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) suddenly was able to predict the future after the hatch implosion.

Turns out, Desmond isn’t so much predicting the future as he is reliving his life again. Huh? What? Yes, that is the explanation we were given and with it a host of other questions about the show, the island and just when Charlie will die. See this whole time Desmond has been saving Charlie’s life by putting up a lightning rod outside his tent, saving Claire from drowning and who knows what else. Yes, the FINAL DESTINATION version of Death is on the island – “The Universe always has a way of correcting itself.”
But let’s go back to Desmond reliving his life once again. First, what a lame explanation. Surely, the writers could have come up with something better than that. Like the hatch implosion gave him some sort of precognition power. But that would be too easy and simple, and nothing with this show is every easy or simple, unfortunately some times. Second, what was with the jewelry shop owner? She’s inside his second life yet knows what’s up? This doesn’t make any sense unless he was only pseudo reliving his life which then debunks everything from the explanation.
“Flashes Before Your Eyes” was a definite step up from last week’s Jack/Kate/Sawyer/Others episode and the back story with Desmond was really well done and enjoyable despite the fact he was “reliving his life.” But it appears gone are the days where everything was interesting and fascinating and shocking but instead we are left with a myriad of questions within questions within questions and plot twists that are becoming ever-increasingly less shocking.
How interesting was it to see Locke and Sayid just now coming back from their trip where Eko died, it’s been so long it was a “oh yeah, those guys” moment. And weren’t they missing two of their party who ventured off with them? You know those two who just all of a sudden started giving a rat’s ass about their predicament in the third season. Did the producers catch on that this was by far the lamest introduction of characters ever and just ditch them in a “hatch” some where?
Again we didn’t get anything else about any other characters in the episode beyond those directly involved – Desmond and Charlie – so if you didn’t like one of those two, you were pretty much screwed. Luckily, Desmond is one of the best characters on the show so it’s hard not to enjoy an episode about him, however, a nice back story on Sayid would be a good change of pace once and a while.
t's funny that im complaining that nothing in this show is ever easy or simple, that's what makes it a great show i think??. If i don't want to think, i should watch Idol, because with that one i won't
think at all, GTO
