Ratings are up slightly, but lead-ins still are a drag

When "Lost" returns for its fourth season, there remains serious questions on whether or not there will be an audience around to welcome it.

Not that "Lost" is doing that bad, obviously, but the ABC series continues to struggle in trying to get a respectable audience after earning a 7.1 rating/12 share, according to Nielsen Media Research Fast Nationals.

That was enough to (barely) beat a rerun of "CSI: NY," but provided little for ABC overall, which finished third overall for the night with a 4.9/.8, according to Zap2it.

Once again, "Lost" suffered from a poor lead-in with "According to Jim" and "In Case of Emergency" getting just a 3.7/6 and a 3.3/5. It finished well behind the "American Idol" results show on Fox (15.1/24), "Till Death" also on Fox (8.5/13), a rerun of "Criminal Minds" on CBS (6.7/11), and "Crossing Jordan" on NBC (5.0/8). The only thing those two comedies did beat was a rerun of "The Search for the Next Doll" on The CW.

Fast Nationals usually provide a snapshot of what Americans are watching by pulling numbers from the top urban markets that includes both live viewing and same-day timeshifted viewing. A rating point generally represents more than 1.1 million households while the share indicates the percentage of televisions turned on that was tuned to the specific program. These numbers typically shift when final ratings are issued.

Hmmm, wonder when they will learn that anything American Idol related is going to beat them.  Everytime.

That's true.  Let's hope the producers realise that!
