The arm in the croc's mouth appears to be a left arm and not in to bad shape other than being cut off from the blood supply.

In the photo, Chang appears to be in good shape - pain medication works miracles. He's probably raising his hand for when the nurse asked "Does anybody in the room want more pain medicine?"

His left arm looks good too, the thumb appears to be a good color and not purple from loss of blood flow. They have an oxygen sensor attached to a finger on the left hand as well. Chang will probably lose some feeling in his hand but he may still be able to use it for the most part.

Modern medicine is amazing, isn't it?  I can't imagine having that kind of catastrophic injury, but at least now there is a chance that he will be able to have his arm work for him.  In the end all he may have is the memory & some scarring.  That & one hell of an amazing story to dine out on!
